At Mater Angelo Care Foundation, we believe every child deserves dignity, care, and a moment to just be a child. On April 10th, our team and volunteers gathered with joy and purpose for our Orphans & Vulnerable Children Care Day. The day was filled with laughter, learning, and nourishment -a true celebration of hope for the youngest members of our community.
The morning began under a bright sky at the community center in Enugu, where 120 children from local orphanages and vulnerable households arrived by bus and on foot. Volunteers greeted them with colourful welcome signs and handed out name tags, instantly setting a warm, inclusive tone. As the children toured the activity stations -face painting, storytelling corner, and a giant outdoor chess board their shyness melted into wide‑eyed wonder.
Learning through play was at the heart of our program. At one station, volunteers guided small groups in puzzles that build problem‑solving skills. Nearby, a “Word Garden” activity invited kids to match letters and images to create new words—encouraging literacy in a fun, hands‑on way. For the older children, a math relay race transformed arithmetic into an exciting team challenge. Through every game, volunteers cheered, coached, and celebrated each little victory.
Midday, everyone gathered for a nourishing meal prepared in collaboration with local partners. Plates brimmed with jollof rice, steamed vegetables, grilled chicken, and fresh fruit. Before they ate, our nutrition educator gave a short, interactive demo on balanced meals using colorful food models to show portion sizes and explain why fruits and vegetables matter. The children sampled each item, swapped stories about their favorite foods, and left with new ideas to share with caregivers at home.
While laughter echoed through the grounds, our volunteer nurses and health workers conducted basic wellness screenings: height and weight measurements, vision checks, and dental inspections. Each child received a personalized “Wellness Card” with their results and simple health tips like washing hands before meals and brushing teeth twice daily. Parents and guardians received guidance on follow‑up care, and those who needed further support were referred to nearby clinics.
By afternoon’s end, the children carried home gift bags containing school supplies, hygiene kits, and a custom “Care Day” certificate. Tears of gratitude and big, beaming smiles were the proof of a day well spent. One volunteer shared, “Seeing Amina’s face light up when she solved her first word puzzle reminded me why we do this.”
Through our 2024 efforts, Mater Angelo has hosted 5 Care Days, reached over 600 children, and trained 80 volunteers to deliver compassionate, professional support. Each event strengthens community bonds and sends a message: no child is forgotten.
