At Mater Angelo Care Foundation, we believe that every caregiver whether professional or volunteer—should be equipped with the skills to respond to emergencies and to provide comfort at life’s most vulnerable moments. That’s why our First Aid & Palliative Care Trainings blend hands‑on techniques with compassionate best practices. Over the course of several intensive days, participants learn everything from CPR and wound management to pain relief strategies and emotional support for end‑of‑life care.
Why First Aid and Palliative Care Matter
In communities with limited access to medical facilities, a trained caregiver can literally make the difference between life and death. Our first aid component covers:
- Basic life support (CPR, rescue breathing, choking interventions)
- Bleeding control, bandaging, and burn treatment
- Recognition of stroke, heart attack, and diabetic emergencies
- Safe patient transfer and spine injury precautions
Meanwhile, our palliative care curriculum ensures that caregivers can:
- Assess and manage pain using non‑pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical approaches
- Provide mouth, skin, and seating care to enhance patient comfort
- Communicate sensitively with patients and families about end‑of‑life needs
- Offer emotional and spiritual support, respecting cultural and personal values
Behind the Scenes: Caregivers in Action
Each training day is a blend of theory, demonstrations, and hands‑on practice. In our simulation lab, caregivers rotate through real‑life scenarios:
- Emergency drill: Participants respond to a staged collapse, practicing CPR and calling for backup.
- Pain management role‑play: Caregivers learn to administer comfort measures and explain medications.
- Bedside manner exercise: Volunteers rehearse active listening and empathetic communication with actors portraying patients.
These behind‑the‑scenes snapshots of our trainees mastering essential skills underscore the program’s intensity and heart. Senior instructor Nurse Chukwudi emphasizes, “Technical skills save lives—but compassion sustains them.”
Real Impact, Real Stories
In 2024 alone, we trained 300 caregivers—including family members, community health workers, and volunteers—in First Aid & Palliative Care. One alumna, Joyce, shares:
“During my grandfather’s final weeks, I applied the pain‑management techniques I learned and was able to keep him comfortable at home. His final days were peaceful because I knew exactly how to help.”
